Elinchrom for the iPhone?

Yes, indeed. You did read that correctly. The folks at Elinchrom have developed Remote RX Units with iPhone & iPad users in mind and a flash-triggering App is set to hit the market in early 2011. While they’re definitely keeping details completely under wraps until the official launch, we do know that you’ll be able to use your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to control your Elinchrom RX flash lights!

From the Elinchrom site:
“We are able to use the Apple devices with an Elinchrom Made application, which controls wirelessly flash power and pilot light settings, triggering flashes, plus many other features of the Elinchrom RX flash units.”

Stay tuned… this one is going to be HUGE.

Small yet incredibly professional.

250512_3It’s amazing how Panasonic was able to fit so much in a 6 x 8” package. But by doing so, the AW-HS50 HD/SD Live Switcher reduces not just size and weight – but cost! In fact, its small, compact size makes the HS50 ideal for mobile production, AV facilities, event video and more.

Don’t let its diminutive size fool. This puppy is packed with features. The HS50′s built-in MultiViewer allows users to view four, nine, or 10 images on a single display. And can even be used to provide a multi-image large-screen presentation. Other advanced functions include dedicated hardware for picture-in-picture (PinP) with dissolve transitions, switchable up-conversion, colour correction, a chroma/linear keyer plus a downstream keyer (DSK), auto or manual video transitions, wipe and PinP preset memories, and frame memories.

And here’s something new from Panasonic – the HS50 offers an IP link to the new AW-RP50 remote camera controller. This link enables remote switching. The AW-HS50 has built-in switchable 10-bit frame synchronizers on each input, ensuring reliable, glitch-free switching even with non-synchronous sources such as remote camera feeds, small camcorders, and computer graphics.

No doubt, this Panasonic Switcher will get a lot of video production companies thinking about switching gear.

Women X Women

It was a highlight of this year’s LG Fashion Week (way back in March). Women x Women was an event set up to showcase 12 of Canada’s top female fashion photographers and to celebrate their outstanding work. Naturally, the aim of the event was to draw attention to Canada’s accomplished female photographers, but also to inspire young women to follow in their footsteps and choose a career on the other side of the lens, a field typically dominated by men.

Vistek was proud to be a sponsor at the event, to provide equipment at no cost, and to lend a beauty of our own to the making of the video – Vistek’s Julie Webster, our charming Event Coordinator.

Beautiful women taking pictures of beautiful women, do you need more of an incentive to watch? Images captured beautifully by videographer, Billie Mintz.

Get the camera out of your face.

EVFcuComing out soon, the Zacuto Z-Finder EVF, a 3.2” high-resolution monitor that is certain to become the long-awaited solution to the woes of filming with a HDSLR. First off, it aligns the camera “inline” (the most stable way) to your rod system. Most important, the Zacuto Z-Finder allows you to get your eye where it most comfortably needs to be – away from the camera. The 16×9 screen, with a resolution that’s 56% greater than a typical DSLR LCD screen, gives you a clear, high-resolution (800×480) image. And because the EVF can be either attached to the rig or detached, it’s great for all kinds of shooting. You can achieve critical focus for low mode shooting, even crane shots. What it all means is, with a Z-Finder EVF, shooting video with an HDSLR is a lot like using a film camera or ENG video camera.

The past meets the present.

Photo ©Jim KitchenJim Kitchen has spent a lot of time in darkrooms and it shows in his work. His portfolio evokes images of long ago. For one thing, he shoots black & white exclusively. And for another, he uses a carbon ink printing process and a digital silver emulsion process to capture the look he’s now become famous for. Recognized as one of Canada’s great black & white film image makers, Jim donates a large chunk of his work to charitable organizations where photos are auctioned off to support Alberta’s Children’s Hospital, The Art Gallery of Calgary and several Woman’s Cancer Charities, among others.

Maximize your HDSLR Shooting with Zacuto’s Z-Finder

Zacuto’s Optical Viewfinders are large loupes that mount to the back of your HDSLR’s LCD, effectively letting you use your LCD as a viewfinder – a handy tool, indeed! And, with 3 versions available giving you correct form factor for video (the Pro 3x, Pro 2.5x and Jr.), you’ll have no problem finding the right one to suit.

Check out Philip Bloom’s review of the Z-Finder: Zacuto’s new DSLR Optical Viewfinder which allows DSLR cameras to have the correct form factor for video. “At the moment,” Bloom says, “there is nothing that comes close to this, it is absolutely essential for video on the 5dmkll. I couldn’t shoot handheld without it that’s for sure.” [source]

Nuit on the town

Last year, armed only with their Canon 7D along with 1.4 and 2.8 lenses, Vistek staffers Alex Garant, Sean Manton and Matthew Nayman, bravely set out to capture the magic of Nuit Blanche. In their mission to give the video a true “nuit” feel, they shot without the use of lighting, shooting in the noir of night at ISOs from 1600 to 3200 – showcasing the incredible low light capabilities of the 7D. (Not to mention, how much fun 3 Vistek staffers can have on a Saturday night date with a Canon HDSLR.)
