Gear Test with Mike Last Photography

Want another perspective on how things went with last week’s Phase One Skateboard event? The folks at Mike Last Photography were good enough to post their thoughts, so we thought it polite that we share!

Vistek and Phase One recently got together to host a few hours at the Ashbridges Bay skatepark and let some local photographers get their hands on some high-end equipment that you don’t get to see in the wild every day. Promises of 80 megapixels and skateboards were enough to get me to sign up.

Justin Van Leeuwen’s Lastolite Hotrod Review

Ottawa-based photographer Justin Van Leeuwen has posted a fantastic review of the Lastolite Hotrod Strip Softbox.

Check out what he has to say about these amazing little light modifiers. His first-hand account covers its basic structure and guides you through setup (including a fantastic 2.5x speed assembly video, seen below) and use with an honest assessment (read: he wasn’t using a review unit; it was his own purchase) of its usability, portability & practicality.

Read Justin’s review here.

Cotton Carrier Now Available!

The Cotton Carrier is an exciting new product line that is now available in all Vistek stores throughout Canada. This is an incredibly unique system that allows you to wear your camera – either on a waist belt harness or on a chest belt harness. After carefully reviewing both versions of this product, I would say that both have their own unique set of characteristics that will appeal to active photographers.

Here is a skateboarder in action – using a Cotton Carrier.

The other system, Cotton Carry Lite, will probably appeal to Photojournalists, Wedding, and Event photographers, as it is a belt system worn around the waist. It allows you to quickly ‘holster’ your camera and lock it in. I ran up a few flights of stairs with my Canon 1DS Mark III to test this sucker out (and you know that’s a pretty heavy camera) and it didn’t move on me at all. The picture below illustrates the belt system.

If you need help getting started with your Cotton Carrier there are some great tutorial videos here for you to learn how to set everything up.

We hope you’ll all enjoy this new and exciting product. I personally, give it 2 thumbs up and I’m looking forward to using mine in the upcoming months.

Maximize your HDSLR Shooting with Zacuto’s Z-Finder

Zacuto’s Optical Viewfinders are large loupes that mount to the back of your HDSLR’s LCD, effectively letting you use your LCD as a viewfinder – a handy tool, indeed! And, with 3 versions available giving you correct form factor for video (the Pro 3x, Pro 2.5x and Jr.), you’ll have no problem finding the right one to suit.

Check out Philip Bloom’s review of the Z-Finder: Zacuto’s new DSLR Optical Viewfinder which allows DSLR cameras to have the correct form factor for video. “At the moment,” Bloom says, “there is nothing that comes close to this, it is absolutely essential for video on the 5dmkll. I couldn’t shoot handheld without it that’s for sure.” [source]
