With the release of the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S prime, Nikon has just introduced the lightest super-telephoto lens in its class. Weighing only 1,160g, it aims to reduce fatigue when shooting over extended periods and impart easier agility for those who capture distant wildlife, birds and sports photography. And by shifting the centre of gravity closer to the camera, the lens allows for greater comfort and stability when shooting handheld.
Compatible with full-frame (FX-format) Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras, this relatively compact super-telephoto lens also delivers the superior edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity that the NIKKOR S line is known for.
First-class glass
This lens comprises one ED glass element, two Super ED glass elements and an SR (short-wavelength refractive) lens element, a unique arrangement that accounts not only for its compact size and weight but also for the trademark optical performance and highly precise chromatic aberration suppression. Together with the use of a Nano Crystal Coat to reduce ghosting and flaring, the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S is able to render the finest details of elusive distant subjects in super-sharp resolution.
Steady shooting
The lens’s optical vibration reduction (VR) function delivers optical image stabilization that’s rated for 5.5 stops of compensation – currently the highest in the NIKKOR Z lens lineup – which rises to six stops when combined with the Synchro VR system of the Z 9. Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor that’s reliably fast, accurate and quiet. A convenient memory-recall function lets you instantly access previously stored focus positions at the push of a button. And while shooting video, a focus breathing compensation mechanism reduces shifting of the angle of view that can happen when focusing.
Go the distance
You can extend this lens’s already generous focal length to 560mm by using the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x – and up to a whopping 800mm with the Z Teleconverter TC-2.0x – to seemingly bring those distant subjects even closer.
