DJI has just unveiled the Mavic 3 drone a slightly larger version of the previous Mavic 2 that features a slew of improvements including the brand new Hasselblad L2D-20c aerial camera with a larger 4/3 CMOS sensor, longer flight time and range and 5.1K video recording capabilities.
It comes in three versions, the Mavic 3 standard and Fly More Combo as well as the Mavic 3 Cine Premium Combo, with the main difference being upgraded video features and upgraded accessories with the Cine Premium Combo version.
Both the Mavic 3 and the Mavic 3 Cine feature the updated Hasselblad L2D-20c camera that has been custom designed to fit on the aircraft.
The main camera features a 20MP 4/3 CMOS sensor boasting 12.8 stops of dynamic range, a f/2.8-f/11 adjustable aperture and 24mm equivalent focal length with an 84° field of view (FOV).
It also uses Vision Detection Auto Focus (VDAF) technology that works with multiple sensors to utilize distance data and optimize focusing speed.
The camera also utilizes Hasselblad’s HNCS (Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution) that starts at the pixel level of the sensor to help ensure more accurate, natural looking colours without the need for post-processing.
The second “Tele” camera sits just above the main camera and boasts a 12MP, fixed aperture of f/4.4, 162mm telephoto lens with 28x hybrid (digital/optical) zoom and a 15° FOV.
Video Features
The Mavic 3 Cine is capable of capturing up to 5.1K/50fps or DCI 4K/120fps video using the Apple ProRes 422 HQ codec with a max bit rate of 3772Mbps and features an internal 1TB SSD and 10Gbps lightspeed data cable.
The standard Mavic 3 version captures 5K/50p or DCI 4K/120fps video using the H.264/H.265 codec with a max bitrate of 140 Mbps (H.265) or 200Mbps (H.264).
Both use 10-bit D-Log colour profile capable of capturing up to one billion colours.
The new “Explore Mode” allows the second tele camera to be used from further afield, to scout and plan shots without disturbing the scene you are scouting.
Both versions include a more powerful 5000 mAh battery that can provide up to 46 minutes of flight time, up to 6km (3.72 miles) of altitude and up to 30 km (18.6 mile) range.
The video transmission range is up to 15 km (9.3 miles) while providing a 1080p 60fps feed to the controller.
Flight Safety
Both versions feature APAS 5.0 which utilizes inputs from six fisheye vision sensors and two wide-angle sensors to sense obstacles in all directions to plan flight routes that avoid them.
Other Features
ActiveTrack 5.0 gives the Mavic 3 the ability to track and move with subjects as they move forward, backward, left, right, and diagonally. It also allows the aircraft to fly alongside or around moving subjects.
There are also new intelligent modes available including:
