DJI has just unveiled the Mavic Air 2 drone a slightly larger version of the previous Mavic Air that features a slew of improvements including longer flight time, improved sensor and 4K 60fps video.
Sensor Improvements
As mentioned above, the Mavic Air 2’s 1/2″ sensor has been given a boost from 21-megapixels to 48-megapixels making it the highest megapixel sensor in the entire Mavic line-up.
It’s also the first Mavic to be able to capture 4K/60fps video (with and HDR option) or Full-HD 1080p/240fps video basically doubling that found on the original Mavic Air, Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro all of which captured at 4K/30fps or Full-HD 1080p/120fps.
Stills are captured at 12-megapixels, but you can also choose the new 48-megapixel option as well.
The new AI driven SmartPhoto feature captures 12-megapixel photos utilizing advanced scene analysis and deep learning to integrate scene recognition, HyperLight, and HDR into one mode for optimal results.
- HyperLight: takes multiple shots and stitches them together to produce noiseless low-light images
- HDR: merges seven different exposures to create photos with rich detail and contrast
- Scene recognition: optimizes different camera parameters for various scenes and supports intelligent recognition of five categories:
- sunset
- skies
- grass
- snow
- trees
All images/video can be stored on the internal 8 GB hard drive.
Improved Flight Systems
Also getting an upgrade are the flight systems including new motors, a new electronic speed controller, enhanced battery technology and a more aerodynamic design.
The new battery system provides a longer flight time of up to 34 minutes vs. the 21 minutes max of the original Mavic Air. Flight speed remains the same at 68 KPH.
DJI’s OcuSync 2.0 transmission technology has been upgraded as well, providing reliable and stable HD video feed from the drone up to a maximum distance of 10 km over both 2.4GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands.
It also uses an anti-interference system to block unwanted signals and an auto-switching feature to move back and forth between frequencies based on the signal strength to ensure a strong, clear video feed at all times.
Improved Flight Safety
The Mavic Air 2 uses the latest APAS 3.0 Obstacle Avoidance System and is able to sense objects in front, behind or below the aircraft.
There are also additional sensors and an auxiliary light located on the bottom of the aircraft that are designed to assist with automatic landings even in lower light conditions.
Intelligent Features
- FocusTrack: ActiveTrack 3.0 | Spotlight 2.0 |
- Point of Interest 3.0
- QuickShots: Dronie | Circle | Helix | Rocket |
- Boomerang | Asteroid
- Hyperlapse: Free | Circle | CourseLock | Waypoint
The Mavic Air 2 will be available as a standalone aircraft or in the fly-more combo which includes extra propellers, a carrying case, extra batteries, charger and a few other accessories.
