Although we have known for several years this was coming our friends over at Cinema5D have reminded us that as of July 13, 2020, frequencies in the 600 MHz range will no longer be available for audio transmission in the United States or Canada.
The frequencies have been sold off to telecommunication to use as part of their 5G mobile networks.
What? You say I can’t use My 600 MHZ wireless mics anymore, say what, why?!!
Because the 600 MHz band has been sold, if you are using a product that operates over this frequency, you will no longer be able to get a clean audio signal and it’s now deemed illegal to do so. So you must immediately cease and desist.
“Wireless microphones that operate in the 600 MHz service band (the 617-652 MHz and 663-698 MHz frequencies) will be required to cease operation by no later than 13th of July 2020, and may be required to cease operation sooner if they could cause interference to new wireless licensees that commence operations on their licensed spectrum in the 600 MHz service band. “ – FCC Wireless Microphone Rules
To top it off, the fines for illegal transmissions over this band can be up to $16,000 USD per day, per channel.
So how do you avoid this issue?
Use wireless microphones that transmit over 2.4GHZ or 1.9GHz frequencies or systems with alternate RF bands as these frequencies are license free and legal for civil use.
You can also use a wired Shotgun type microphone as it doesn’t interfere with radio signals. But obviously getting the mic as close to the sound source is best!
Check your system today and replace it if you are currently using an older 600mhz system!
