Blackmagic has announced the ATEM Television Studio HD8, part of what they are calling a new family of portable all-in-one live production switchers featuring broadcast grade control panels and advanced features such as streaming and recording.
Both versions are essentially fully featured broadcast quality live production studios offering 8 standards converted 3G-SDI inputs, built-in streaming capabilities, a master recorder, multiview capabilities, USB webcam support, Digital Video Effects (DVEs), 4 ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyers, media players, talkback, a four-way Ethernet switch and optional internal cloud media storage.
By combining a switcher and control panel into the same body, these units are extremely portable and can be used virtually anywhere.
On the front panel of the unit, there are buttons to select sources, trigger transitions and set-up video effects as well as a built in t-bar allowing for manual transition control, and a audio mixer control area with live metering on a dedicated LCD screen.
There are eight independent 3G-SDI inputs, each with its own dedicated standards converter giving it the ability to convert any 1080HD or 720HD input source to the video standard of the switcher.
The nine 3G-SDI program outputs providing enough connections to send a separate program return feeds to all of connected cameras as well as to send tally, talkback and control information back to the cameras.
There are also two dedicated aux outputs, for driving stage monitors and master recorders, as well as a dedicated 3G-SDI and HDMI output for the multiview camera monitoring.
The built-in Fairlight audio mixer allows for complex live sound mixing with enough channels for all SDI inputs, as well as extra channels for the XLR, RCA and MADI inputs.
Each input channel also features its own high-quality 6 band parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, expander and noise gate as well as level and pan controls. These can be controlled from the dedicated audio mixer controls and LCD found on the front panel.
Lastly, there is also a built-in hardware streaming engine allowing for live streaming to a global audience via services such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitch and works using an ethernet connection to the internet, or using mobile data via a connected smartphone.
ATEM Television Studio HD8 Features
ATEM Microphone Converter
The converter itself features four analog mic/line selectable inputs that also provide 48V phantom power.
It offers an extremely low noise floor of -129dBV, a dynamic range of 131dB(A), low distortion of 0.002% and uniform tolerances across all channels.
There are eight separate ADCs on each input that collectively extend the dynamic range and a HDMI monitoring output that when connected to a TV or monitor shows scrolling audio waveforms.
Lastly, microphone levels are adjusted by a digital pre amplifier gain stage and processed in full internal 32 bit RAW audio bit depth, providing much greater adjustment precision than what the MADI audio standard can support.
