Canon has announced what they are basically calling a replacement for their EOS Rebel and EOS M camera lines, the compact, APS-C size sensor, EOS R100 camera and a new “pancake” style lens, the RF28mm f/2.8 STM.
Canon EOS R100 Camera
Designed to appeal to both first-time photographers looking to upgrade from their smartphone to a mirrorless camera and/or existing EOS Rebel or EOS M camera users who want to move up to the new RF mount.
Not to be confused with it’s full-frame sized sensor brethren, the entry-level EOS RF100 features a 24.2 megapixel APS-C size sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 image processor that can capture cropped 4K/24p video as well as full-width Full HD (1080p)/60p video.
It also offers dual-pixel autofocus with eye and face detection as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and is compatible with the complete lineup of Canon’s RF and RF-S lenses.
Canon’s older EF and EF-S lenses can also be mounted by using one of Canon’s EF-EOS R mount adapters (each sold separately).
The body itself is quite small, featuring a small handgrip and fairly basic controls located on the top of the camera, including a single mode selection dial, the on/off switch, a video record button, command dial and shutter release button.
On the back right of the camera you will find various control buttons and a four-way D-pad located in the lower right hand corner.
The main feature on the back of the camera is the three-inch, 1.04 million dot rear LCD screen that offers neither articulating capabilities, nor touchscreen functionality. If you wish to change any settings, you have to use the control buttons and D-pad to navigate them.
Other features include a USB terminal and micro HDMI port on the right side of the camera and a microphone jack and a port for an intervalometer on the left side.
Finally, the EOS R100 features a single UHS-I SD card port that is located beside the LP-E17 battery in the battery compartment on the bottom of the camera.
