Canon has announced a new enthusiast level camera, the EOS R50, the “spiritual” successor to the EOS M50 II along with two affordable lenses, the RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM and the RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.
The EOS R50 is a 24.2-megapixel, APS-C sensor camera that packs a ton of features into its compact body including Canon’s newer DIGIC X processor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology.
The Dual Pixel AF uses up to 651 automatically selected AF points and can cover up to 100% (approximately) of the picture area depending on the lens being used.
It also utilizes AI-driven subject recognition that can automatically select and track subjects including people, animals (dogs, cats and birds), as well as vehicles such as cars and motorcycles.

With it’s impressive video capabilities, the R50 can record uncropped 4K 30p video from oversampled 6K footage as well as Full-HD high-frame rate video up to 120 frames per second.
Gone is the 30-minute recording limit found on some of Canon’s previous cameras with the R50 capable of continuously recording for up to an hour.
There is also a feature called Movie for Close-Ups Demos mode that ensures the correct subject is always in focus.
When this mode is activated, it allows the camera to quickly switch focus from the on-camera subject to an object that is presented towards the camera’s lens.
Canon says that this mode is meant to be used for video content where showing a product to the viewers is necessary, such as in makeup demos or cooking videos.
The R50 also allows you to set Movie rotation information during or after recording video, allowing videos to be played in vertical composition when viewing on a smartphone.
There is also an Aspect Markers Function that displays visual markers for the different aspect ratios required by various social media sites allowing you to make sure your videos will appear correctly on them.
For live streamers the R50 is UVC/UAC compatible which allows it to be used as a web cam capable of streaming live video in Full HD 30 fps (fixed), without additional computer software.
For photographers, the R50 captures stills in JPEG and HEIF in addition to RAW and C-RAW file formats.
It has a maximum burst rate of up to 15 frames per second using the electronic shutter mode with no shutter noise, and up to 12 frames per second when using the electronic first curtain shutter.
The 2.36-million dot OLED viewfinder supports a refresh rate of up to 120fps with 100% view coverage and the 3.0-inch, 1.62 million dot Clear View LCD II Vari-angle Touchscreen allows for touch and drag functionality when changing settings.
Lastly, the R50 supports both wire and wireless communications via the USB Type-C port as well as built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities.
