The DJI RS4 and RS4 Pro gimbals boast a number of upgrades from their predecessors, the RS3 and RS3 Pro, offering new and improved features such as next-gen vertical shooting, an improved accessory ecosystem, and of course, next-level stabilization.
Features and Upgrades
The new RS4 and RS4 Pro models offer new and improved features including DJI’s new fourth-generation RS algorithm allowing for smoother transitions and feature an improved vertical shooting mode.
RS4:
- Extended Tilt Arm: The RS4’s tilt arm has been extended by 8.5mm allowing it to accommodate larger camera bodies.
- Improved Stabilization: Utilizes DJI’s 4th-generation stabilization algorithm, enhancing stability in both horizontal and vertical orientations.
- New Accessories: Features a larger ARCA Swiss type base plate allowing for easier camera mounting, a customizable front trigger, and a touch screen similar to the previous RS3 model.
RS4 Pro:
- Compatibility: The RS4 Pro is compatible with previous-generation DJI RS series accessories and other DJI PRO ecosystem products.
- Payload/Balance & Improved Motor: With a payload capacity of up to 4.5 kilos (9.15lbs), it is well suited for larger cameras. Balance is also improved and a 20% increase in motor torque allows for smoother, more responsive tracking.
- Car Mount Mode: Offers optimized stabilization for vehicle shoots.
- High-Capacity Battery Grip: Supports the DJI RS BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip, allowing for power delivery via USB-C.
- Lidar Focusing & Dual Motors: With 76,800 ranging points and increased motor speed, focusing is more accurate and intelligent, suitable for both vintage and modern lenses
- Other Features: Includes additional accessories like a new base plate, back handle, an updated follow focus motor and a RSA port for connecting other accessories.
LiDAR Focusing and Dual Focus & Zoom Motors
As mentioned above, the RS4 Pro features an improved Focus Pro LiDAR system that not only supports autofocus with manual focus lenses but also increases the speed of focus and lens zoom adjustments by 30%, when compared to the original DJI Focus Motor.
Other features include:
- Up to 20M Distance Subject Focusing: Utilizes over 76,000 ranging points, to ensure precise focus even in complex scenes.
- Enhanced AI Recognition Algorithms: Uses a built-in camera to identify subjects, including faces and cars, making it highly effective in low-light conditions.
- High Torque Focus Pro Motors: New motors that support both focus and zoom control.
The RS4 Pro is also fully compatible with DJI”s Pro ecosystem allowing for seamless integration and control through the DJI app, offering:
- Remote Focus Pulling: From up to 160m away, the hand unit or wheel provides tactile feedback, adjustable for personal preference.
- Versatility for Solo Operators: The system’s design caters to the needs of solo cinematographers, offering flexibility without sacrificing precision.
Battery Life and High-Capacity Options
Finally, both the RS4 and RS4 Pro boast high-capacity battery options via the included RS BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip offering vastly improved shooting and run times.
RS4:
- Standard Battery Life: Offers up to 12 hours.
- High-Capacity Battery Grip (DJI RS BG70): Extends shooting times to up to 29.5 hours, essentially mirroring the Pro’s capacity.
- Power Output: Provides 18 watts of power, sufficient for extended shoots and powering accessories.
RS4 Pro:
- Battery Runtime: Approximately 2.4x longer than the previous RS3 Pro model
- High-Capacity Battery Grip (DJI RS BG70): Extends runtime to 29 hours, supports powering the camera and accessories with up to 18 watts via USB-C.
