Along with a slew of other launches, Fujifilm recently announced the new GFX 100S II, the seventh model in its GFX lineup and the fifth with a 100+MP sensor. Although visibly similar to its slightly older sibling, the GFX 100S, some useful upgrades and welcome enhancements make the GFX 100S II a compelling choice for anyone seeking a reasonably affordable top-quality entry into the medium-format market.
Weighing in at just 883g, this is the lightest 102MP body in Fujifilm’s GFX System. Obviously, there’s no fair comparison with Fujifilm’s higher-end (and considerably more expensive) flagship GFX model, the GFX 100 II, but to its great advantage the 100S II inherits the same newly developed GFX 102MP CMOS II image sensor.
In a powerful pairing with the X-Processor 5 engine, they combine to boost wide dynamic range noticeably and deliver an extended ISO sensitivity range spanning 80 to 12800, now with improved readout speed and continuous shooting reaching up to 7 fps, as well as better subject detection and faster autofocus capabilities.
The level of image quality is exactly what you’d expect from such a large ultra-high-resolution sensor: incredibly sharp detail rendered in signature Fujifilm rich colour.
With the GFX100S II, you can use the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot feature to combine 16 RAW files and generate a stunning composite image packing roughly 400 million pixels. You also get a nice range of Fujifilm film simulations to play with, 20 in all, including the recently added REALA ACE, to give images the aura of a bygone but not-forgotten era in photography.
Shooters will also appreciate noticeable improvements in the viewfinder, now larger and boasting 5.76M dots versus the former’s 3.69M dots, with 0.84x magnification and a faster refresh rate of up to 120hz. The GFX 100S II also benefits from more versatile 3.2-inch three-way tilting touchscreen LCD.
Although the GFX 100S II appears to be more of a stills-centric hybrid camera, modest improvements in the video department include the ability to record 4K up to 30 fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 internally, as well as output raw video to an external recorder.
