With the launch of the new Instax WIDE Evo, Fujifilm has merged aspects of the digital hybrid Mini Evo with those of its analogue WIDE series to give users a bit of the best of both worlds.

This is a highly capable instant camera – Fujifilm says that it’s their most premium model yet – and one that’s bound to turn heads for its handsome design and classy exterior. It’s a step away from the retro look of the Mini, veering in the direction of Fujifilm’s more contemporary X series styling.
The real differentiator, though – and the features that put the “wide” in this unique camera’s name – are the wide-angle lens it sports and the wide-format images it creates.
At 16mm, this is the widest-angle lens in Instax history. You can use the camera’s built-in wide-format function to broaden the field of view, giving you ample perspective to capture group shots, expansive landscapes and more.
Instax WIDE instant film produces relatively large-sized 3×5-inch photos, a notable step up from the Mini’s wallet-sized output. Thanks to its use of a single compact lens, the camera captures images at a print-ready 318 dpi, regardless of whether you’re shooting with the wide-angle mode switched on or off.

One of the biggest benefits of this camera’s analog/digital-format combination is that you can pick which images to print straight out of the camera and/or choose the ones you’d like to upload digitally to your smartphone via the app to save and share electronically. Way fewer wasted prints.
The camera not only saves your shots digitally in the moment, but you can also send stored digital pics from your existing camera roll to the Instax WIDE Evo and print them out.
As with the Instax Mini Evo, you’ve got 10 lens effects and 10 film effects to play with, as well as the option to adjust the intensity of your chosen settings. And you can achieve this simply by twisting the lens to arrive at your desired effect.
This is one handsome camera, sporting a sleek black body with subtle grey accents: it’s a bit of a brick when compared with the Mini’s pocketable dimensions, but that’s a small trade-off for anyone willing to make the sacrifice for going wide.
At this size, the camera just feels good in the hand. To accentuate the tangible shooting experience, the Fujifilm Instax WIDE Evo body also sports a print crank, shutter lever and other manual dials that many photographers will find pleasantly satisfying to use.
