The new Blackmagic PYXIS 12K is here. Building on the success of the original compact box-styled 6K version, Blackmagic Design has now up the ante, apparently following in the footsteps of the higher-end URSA Cine 12K but in a smaller form factor and more affordable price.
Announced at this year’s NAB show in Las Vegas, this advanced digital film camera features a revolutionary full-frame 36x24mm RGBW sensor with up to 12288×8040 resolution and 16 stops of dynamic range.
Yes, it’s the same sensor found in the URSA Cine 12K, same 16 stops of dynamic range.
Combined with Blackmagic colour science, this sensor delivers a level of quality comparable with some of the most expensive digital cinema cameras currently available.
Allowing for the capture of deeper colours, higher image detail and a wider dynamic range, this is the kind of pro-level quality required for feature films and TV documentaries, but it also translates into stunning cinematic content for the most arresting YouTube videos, eye-catching social media and similar applications.

The multi-scale sensor lets you shoot in 12K, 8K or 4K at the full sensor size; as well as up to 40 fps at 12288×8040 3:2 open gate or 60 fps at 12288×5112 2.4:1 and 112 fps at 8192×3408 8K.
You can even work in true anamorphic 6:5 at higher resolutions than other cameras using anamorphic lenses in 9.6K at 9648×8040.
With a native ISO range spanning 200 to 3200 (and optimized for 800), the PYXIS 12K makes it easy to capture great footage even in challenging lighting conditions.
Made of precision CNC machined aerospace aluminum, the compact body is lightweight but strong and fitted with multiple mounting points and side plates that make it easy to mount on rigs such as cranes, gimbals or drones, as well as attach accessories like handles and mics.
Available in three lens-mount options – PL, L and locking EF – the PYXIS 12K boasts dual CFExpress media recorders and 10G Ethernet connections. For added convenience, it’s also designed for seamless ease of use with the Blackmagic Cloud.
