Hot on the heels of their teaser announcement, Nikon has released the full specs & pricing for their newest FX full-frame camera, the D850.
The new sensor, coupled with Nikon’s EXPEED 5 image processing engine allows the D850 to capture light more efficiently with a wider dynamic range. It also increases the D850’s low-noise image capturing capabilities offering a wide ISO range of 64 – 25,600 (expandable down to 32 – or up to 102,400).

Autofocus is the same as found on the flagship D5 model, a 153-point, Multi-Cam 20K AF system, featuring 99 cross type sensors, 15 of which are sensitive to f/8. Integrated focus stacking using the Focus Shift Mode allows users to set focal steps from 1 to 10 for up to 300 automated shots, which then get stored in a dedicated folder for easy identification when using 3rd party focus stacking software.
Another feature to note is the introduction of a Silent Shooter mode when shooting in Live View. When shooting in this mode, the electronic shutter operates at up to 6fps (AF/AE locked), with an additional mode that will enable 8.6-megapixel JPG capture at up to 30fps. The caveat to this mode is that it will capture images with a 1.5x DX crop.
The D850 offers 3 different RAW sizes, large (45.7MP), medium (25.6MP) and small (11.4MP) and five different image formats:
The D850 also offers a tilting touchscreen LCD screen with Touch AF, Touch Shutter control and navigation menus, playback and more. You can also zoom in during Live View shooting to use the new Pinpoint AF allowing you to put focus right where you want it.
Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity mean shooters can send images on the fly to their phones, or to Nikon’s Snapbridge program via Wi-Fi.
Not to be left out, multimedia producers will be happy with the D850’s ability to capture Full-Frame 16:9 width 4K UHD video at 24/30fps or Full HD 1080p slow motion video at up to 120fps (4x or 5x) to the XQD or SDHC II card slots. Uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit video capture is possible via HDMI cable to an external recorder.
