The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III isn’t a giant leap forward over the previous E-M10 Mark II, but it does put the ability to record Ultra HD 4K video into the hands of enthusiasts and those upgrading from their smartphones at a very reasonable price.
As with previous E-M10 models, the E-M10 Mark III features a 16MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, but boasts the same TruePic III processing engine found in their flagship E-M1 Mark II.
As with all of the OM-D series, the E-M10 Mark III is a beautiful looking camera, especially in silver. The body still feels relatively small for those of us with larger hands, but Olympus has addressed this by beefing up the front grip slightly providing a slightly more satisfying hold over the Mark II.
Other improvements over the Mark II include an improved AF system with 121-points (81 on the Mark II) which includes Face Priority and Eye Detection. The maximum ISO auto range has also been given a bump up to 6400 (1600 on the Mark II) and burst shooting gets a very slight boost up to 8.6fps (8.5fps on the Mark II).
For those who like to shoot with filters in-camera, there is a new Bleach Bypass option available which brings the total number of Art Filters up to 15.
The new Advanced Photo (AP) mode includes the really cool Live Composite mode as well as a Multiple Exposure mode allowing you to combine different images into one while still in-camera.
As mentioned, the Mark III’s improved video capabilities now allows shooters to capture 4K footage at up to 30fps or Full HD at 60fps with full autofocus and 5-Axis image stabilization available.
Olympus knows that the OM-D E-M10 Mark III isn’t going to wow everyone, but that’s not necessarily the goal.
Available as body only, or as a kit with a 14-42mm lens, the E-M10 Mark III is a solidly built, entry level camera with a host of features, including 4K video, that will appeal both to beginners and those looking to step-up from their smartphones.
