Sony has announced what they say is the “world’s lightest” large-aperture telephoto zoom lens, the second generation Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II.
The new Sony Alpha 7 IV is a truly advanced hybrid full-frame mirrorless
Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens
Sony has redesigned this second generation lens from the ground up building it around two pairs of Extreme Dynamic (ED) linear motors that drive it’s two focus groups which they say offer up to four times faster focus 30% improved focus tracking when compared to the previous version.
When paired with the Sony Alpha 1 camera, it is capable of high-speed continuous shooting at up to 30fps.
There are two aspherical lens elements, including one extreme aspherical (XA) element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision, to control distance-related aberration variations to ensure outstanding resolution throughout the image area.
It also uses two extra-low dispersion (ED) spherical glass elements and two Super ED spherical glass elements to significantly reduce chromatic aberration without colour bleeding.
In a first for an Alpha lens, there is also a ED aspherical element which simultaneously suppresses chromatic and spherical aberration.
Thanks to it’s large f/2.8 aperture, and a newly developed 11-blade aperture unit, the lens will create beautiful close-up or distance bokeh images.
The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 15.7 inches (0.4 meters) at 70mm and 32.3 inches (0.82 meters) at 200mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.3x.
It can also paired with one of Sony’s 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters extending it’s focal length up to 400mm at an f/5.6 aperture.
Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II produces a uniform anti-reflection coating on the surface of the lens helping to reduce unwanted flare and ghosting in challenging lighting conditions.

Video Applications
With its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and advanced AF performance, the new lens is perfect for video applications.
The lens was designed to dramatically reduce focus breathing, focus shift, and axis shift when zooming helping to reduce unwanted image movement and angle of view variations.
It also features independent control rings for focus, zoom, and aperture (with a click ON/OFF switch), allowing for more precise manual operation and it’s Linear Response MF ensures responsive, low-lag manual focus control.
The supplied lens hood also features an opening that allows convenient operation of circular polarizing filters or variable ND filters for more creative flexibility.
