The new Fujifilm GFX100RF is surprisingly compact

With the launch of the new GFX100RF, we now have surprisingly compact and highly portable addition to Fujifilm’s 100MP medium-format camera lineup. Weighing in at just 735g, it’s currently the lightest model in the the entire history of the GFX series.

The GFX100RF features a rangefinder-style body with offset viewfinder and machined-aluminum dials.

Even with its fixed 35mm lens, the GFX100RF beats the previous lightweight champion titleholders, the discontinued 50MP GFX 50 R at 775g and GFX 50 S at 740g – and that’s both body only.

This is no small feat, especially considering how much the new model shares with its slightly older sibling, the GFX 100 II, launched in May 2024, coupled with certain aspects of Fujifilm’s X100 series.

Similarities shared with the GFX 100 II include the expansive 102MP medium-format BSI CMOS sensor and powerful X-Processor 5 image-processing engine, weather-sealed body (when the supplied adapter ring and a compatible filter are attached) tilting touchscreen and more.

With a sensor almost 70% larger than full frame, the GFX100RF can deliver up to 16-bit RAW files for the superb colour accuracy, wide dynamic range and low noise you’d expect from such a premium mirrorless camera.

Like the GFX 100 II, this new model also has 20 film simulations to choose from, based on 90 years of Fujifilm’s colour science and ready to be applied directly in camera.

Visible differences include the slick rangefinder-style body and offset viewfinder, which harken back to the GFX 50 R design, as well as handsome machined-aluminum dials now giving users a nice tactile handling experience.

From the X100 series, GFX100RF inherits its svelte look and feel, plus an internal neutral density (ND) filter to optically reduce light transmission in bright environments and allow for wider apertures, extended shutter speeds and creative long-exposure effects.

Regarding that fixed 35mm lens with its ultra-quiet leaf shutter: the angle of view is actually a 28mm full-frame equivalent, and the lens features a close focus distance of just 20cm. Despite its limitations, the fixed-lens structure also accounts for some of the camera’s overall slimness.

In an altogether first for Fujifilm cameras, an all-new aspect ratio dial positioned on the back of the GFX100RF provides instant access to nine image formats, including 4:3 from the venerable Fujifilm GX680, 65:24 from the Fujifilm TX-1 and 1:1 from Fujifilm’s very first camera, the Fujica Six.

For anyone willing to splurge their way into the Fujifilm GFX 100MP medium-format system, this new lightweight model makes a stylish statement and perfectly respectable entry point.
