The new Fujifilm X-M5 is designed for serious content creators looking for a top-notch lightweight tool to capture and share high-quality video content fast and easily.
The company is clearly positioning this mirrorless digital camera as a step up from a smartphone, which, as they like to point out, boasts a sensor 16 times larger than the one typically found in a phone.
It’s also being marketed as an affordable alternative to some of the higher-end X Series models while retaining the cutting-edge tech and analogue allure of this much-loved lineup.
It’s been quite a while since the original X-M1 made its debut in 2013, and the new X-M5 offers several numerous advances to keep it relevant in today’s market, including some choice features borrowed from the hugely popular X100VI and X-T50.
Weighing in at just 355g, it’s also one of Fujifilm’s smallest and lightest X Series cameras to date, but it’s big in all the right places.
The X-M5’s large 26MP APS-C sensor allows you to capture rich colours with striking detail, even in low light, ready to share without the need for post-processing. The large three-inch vari-angle LCD gives you interactive touchscreen controls to obtain the professional-looking results you want, including optical lens blur to soften backgrounds, in vertical or square formats, and built-in skin smoothing, so you always look your best.
Fujifilm has also gone to lengths to ensure high-quality audio capture with this model, packing it with three built-in microphones and giving you four available modes – surround, front-priority, back-priority and front-and-back priority – to change sensitivity based on the direction of the sound. The camera can even detect and reduce environmental noise, while optimizing speech whether you’re in front of or behind the camera as well.
From the X-T50, the new X-M5 inherits a dedicated film-simulation mode dial, giving you instant access to up to 20 creative looks based on Fujifilm’s historic analogue film stock, which can be applied to both videos and photos, along with your live streams.
The X-M5’s superb built-in AI-driven subject-detection autofocus can also be found in the X100VI and X-T50, delivering exceptional accuracy in challenging lighting conditions, even when a subject is moving at high speed.
For a nice finishing touch, Bluetooth, WiFi and USB Type-C connectivity combine with the free Fujifilm XApp to connect you and the camera seamlessly with the wider world, so you can post your stellar content the moment it’s created.
Accompanying the launch are two new lenses: the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 500mm f/5.6 R LM OIS WR super-telephoto lens and the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II zoom. The X-M5 is also available as a kit with the zoom lens.
