The new Insta360 X5 360-degree 8K action cam has just launched, barely a year after the X4 made its debut. They look very similar – almost identical, in fact – but the X5 packs some interesting upgrades. Here’s what sets the new one apart from its predecessor.

Dual 1/1.28″ sensors
These new sensors are noticeably larger than the 1/2″ ones found in the X4. With the ability to capture more light, they also support 13.5 stops of dynamic range with a 2.4μm-equivalent pixel size to deliver pro-level imaging in greater clarity, sharper detail and more vibrant colours, even in low-light conditions.
Triple AI chips
This is a first for a 360 camera: equipped with three AI chips, the X5 delivers a substantial 140% increase in overall computing power. This includes two dedicated pro imaging chips for enhanced low-light quality and reduced noise, while a 5nm AI chip boosts image processing, both in speed and quality.
InstaFrame mode
This cool feature allows you to shoot ready-to-share flat video and 360-degree video simultaneously. This gets you the best of both: a perfectly framed, instantly shareable flat video that requires no editing or reframing, plus a full 360-degree video that you can reframe and edit later at will.
You can also choose between a fixed view that follows a consistent direction or a selfie view that keeps you in frame throughout the video.

Replaceable lenses
The X5 lenses feature an ultra-hard coating that makes them the most durable yet, but if they do get damaged, you can take them out and replace them yourself – no waiting for repairs. (Like the X4, however, the X5 comes equipped with standard protective lens guards to help avoid impact damage.)
Waterproof to 15m
With IP68 waterproofing down to 15m – that’s a whopping 50% improvement over the X4 – you can take the X5 deeper than any Insta360 camera, no dive case needed. But when enclosed in the optional dive case, the X5 is good to a mind-numbing depth of 50m.
Wind guard for clearer audio
In another first for 360-degree cameras, the X5 features a multi-layer steel-mesh wind guard to reduce distracting wind noise, as well as a boosted audio algorithm to ensure crystal-clear sound.
Improved battery life
The X5 uses a new 2400-mAh battery (up from the X4’s 2290-mAh one) to deliver up to 185 minutes of recording at 5.7K 24 fps in smart power-saving mode – that’s a 37% increase over its predecessor. And if you’re in a hurry to get back to shooting, Fast Charging now gets you powered up to nearly full capacity (80%) in just 20 minutes.
If you’re familiar with the Insta360 lineup and looking to upgrade, the new X5 offers a healthy step up. And if you’re just getting into this type of shooting, the Insta360 X5 provides an awesome entry point.
