Can You Shoot A Car Commercial with A DJI Osmo Action Camera?

The DJI Osmo Action Camera, released earlier this year, is the newest kid on the block in the world of action cameras, and a direct competitor to GoPro’s well established and popular Hero line.

Given how new the Osmo Action is, we wanted to put it through its paces in a real world situation, but try something that we felt would show that the Osmo Action can be used for something more substantial than just capturing the action from your latest extreme sports adventure.

So we put on our thinking caps, and decided to see if we could film a professional looking car commercial using nothing but the Osmo Action as the main camera.

With the idea in place, we packed our gear and set off to Caledon, Ontario to film our “commercial” along the Forks of the Credit Road.

Meet Osmo Action, DJI’s versatile new action camera that was built to go wherever adventure takes you. Dual screens and an intuitive design let you effortlessly capture your world, and advanced technologies like RockSteady stabilization ensure breathtaking results that give viewers a front seat to your moments.

A chase car was used to capture most of the footage, but due to the narrow, one lane in each direction nature of the road, it wouldn’t have been prudent (or safe) to pull up alongside the feature vehicle. Remember kids, safety always comes first!

The Forks of the Credit Road is a long, winding road, that cuts through forest land and features a sharp switchback as it begins its climb up the side of the Niagara Escarpment. In other words, the perfect setting visually, for our faux car commercial shoot.

In order to achieve shots similar to those found in actual car commercials, using only the Osmo Action (OA), required a little bit of MacGyvering of equipment while on location. Namely, securing the OA (mounted on a Ronin-S) to the end of a boom pole so we could safely get side shots.

Finally, with everything mounted and everyone strapped in, it was time to start filming!

Apart from the logistics of getting out to the location and setting up the gear for the shoot, the actual filming process itself, was pretty straightforward and relatively easy to accomplish in an afternoon.

    The Final Product…

As you’ll be able to see by watching the video below, the results are pretty impressive and reveal that yes, you can indeed, film a pretty professional looking car commercial with nothing more than a Osmo Action!

In the video, Dale details the filming process and shares some great tips for post processing that will help you to achieve the “cinematic” look you see in much bigger commercial productions.

We highly recommend watching the video from start to finish, but if you want to skip the tutorial parts, the “commercial” itself starts around the 7:00 minute mark.
